Prescription Medications for the Treatment of Vertigo

If you are experiencing issues with vertigo, then you understand just how serious this side effect can be. Vertigo can make it very difficult for any person to carry on their life as normal and can make many people quite ill. Vertigo can be difficult to treat because it is isn’t actually a disease or illness, it is a symptom itself. Many times, the best way to get rid of vertigo is to treat the condition that is actually causing this symptom. Many times, this, or utilizing certain home remedies is the best way to take care of vertigo issues. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

In some more serious case, especially in situations where the vertigo is drastically impairing a person’s quality of life, prescription medications can be used to treat vertigo. While these medications should always be prescribed under the supervision of a licensed medical doctor, here is a basic overview of some of the most common medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, that can be used to treat vertigo.

  1. Antihistamines- They are known for offering short-term vertigo relief. You may already have antihistamines from allergies or sinus issues, which can be used, with doctor approval, to help with your vertigo as well.
  2. Anticholingerics- They come in the form of skin patches and can help reduce dizziness. They are easy to place on the skin for immediate relief. However, they are not a long-term solution.
  3. Water Pills- Diuretics are popular for those who suffer from vertigo because of Meniere’s disease.
  4. Anti-Nausea medication- This can be prescribed or purchased over-the-counter as a way to provide immediate relief for those who feel sick to their stomachs as a result of their vertigo. However, this may also cause drowsiness.
  5. Anti-anxiety medications- Medications such as Xanax and Valium are sometimes used to help with vertigo. However, they are very controversial prescription medication. They can cause drowsiness and are known for being addictive.
  6. Migraine medication- Migraines can actually cause vertigo and if this is the cause of your issues, then getting rid of the migraines first may help. Many doctors will actually prescribe medications that help prevent migraines to eliminate vertigo from starting at all.

Many of these treatments can’t actually cure the vertigo, but they can make it easier to manage and less severe.

If you have been suffering from vertigo and cannot find the relief that you are looking for, consider giving these medications a try. Making an appointment with your loved one’s doctor to discuss different medication treatment options is a great way to make sure that they are getting the care that they need to return to life as normal, without the discomfort of vertigo.
